Diane von Furstenberg was born in Belgium. She made a name in the fashion industry with her creation of wrap dresses in New York, in year 1972. She started putting up businesses, all of them successful, from cosmetic lines to accessories. By 1974, the wrap around dress came in the picture. By 1975, the Diane Von Furstenberg collection finally became a signature brand, with new products from luggage to eyewear. The year after, Diane made it to the covers of News Week Magazine and Wall Street Journal because of her successful wrap dresses. That same year, she launched her first perfume called Tatiana, named after her daughter, which instantly became a hit in the fashion world. In 1979, Diane wrote “Diane von Furstenberg’s Book of Beauty”, her own idea of sharing what she has learned in the cosmetic industry.
Four years after (1983), the biggest pharmaceutical firm in Britain, Beecham Group Limited, took over Diane’s beauty business. In 1985, from the fashion whirlwind in the United States, she decided to move to Paris, where she got herself into a French publishing house and five years later, she was again back to the US.
Diane published in 1991 her first in a series of three coffee table books inspired on life’s rituals called Beds. Diane continues this, publishing in 1993 The Bath, and in 1996, The Table. She had a re-launch of her original wrap around dress, inspired by the young generation’s buying the seventy’s wrap dresses from vintage shops. Because of her success, Diane was inspired to publish another book; this time to let everyone see the difference of the past from the future. She launched Diane: A Signature Life, her own business memoirs. In 2001, Diane felt the need of having a young and creative designer so she hired Nathan Jenden as her Creative Director. Consequently, she expanded her headquarters, the West Village, to give way to one of her flagship called the Shop. It also has a theater that caters young and aspiring talents and models.
With the fast increase of demands for her products, Diane created her electronic based shop that is now also drawing a lot of attention to clients who prefer to shop online at the convenience of their homes. That same year 2003, she teamed up with Wimbledon legend Venus Williams to make her own Wimbledon Dress, which unsurprisingly made it to the Wimbledon Hall of Fame.
In 2004, she launched her elegant jewelry line that made a big hit in the market.
